Where Will Your Ferret Live
Many people think that ferrets are so small – and so wild – that they must always be kept caged, unless their owner is playing with them. This isn’t true. First, ferrets are about the size of small house cats, and while they may be quite active, they are not ‘wild.’ For the most part, your ferret should be able to roam about your home freely.
At the same time, however, this does not mean that you will not need a cage, and that the ferret won’t be spending some time in it. People often cage their ferrets when they are not home, or when they sleep at night. The main reason that this is done is for the protection of the ferret.
Ferrets are highly curious, and will investigate everything. They also do not know any fear. This means that they get themselves into dangerous situations fairly often, if left unattended – and this is a good case for keeping the ferret in a cage when you are unable to watch it.
Not just any cage will do, however. First, do not make the mistake of using a glass or plastic aquarium to house your ferret. This does not allow them to get enough air circulation. Instead, you need a cage with bars. A small cage also is not sufficient.
Remember that ferrets are highly active. They need room to move around. You can purchase a multi-level cage for the ferret, and he will be quite happy in it. These cages come in a variety of sizes, and the size you need really depends on how much time your ferret will be spending in the cage. Obviously, if he will spend a great deal of time there, you need the biggest cage you can get for him.
The cage must be equipped with things that your ferret wants and needs. It should have a litter box inside, located in one of the corners. It should also have soft bedding that the ferret can move around as he sees fit. Food and water are essential, and your ferret will greatly appreciate some toys in his cage as well.
When your ferret is outside of the cage, he may still use it as his ‘nest.’ He may also opt to ‘build’ one or more nests in other areas of your home. He will gather items around your home to create his nests – and when he finds something that he considers to be treasure – like your keys or wallet, you can look for it in one of his nests. Note, however, that some nests will not be easily accessible by you, so don’t allow your important items to become the ferret’s cherished treasures.
Your ferret wants to interact with you and explore your home. It isn’t fair to the ferret to keep it caged all of the time. Again, a cage is needed, and the ferret will need to be caged sometimes. But the majority of the time, the ferret will be happiest when he can freely roam around your home and make new discoveries.
