Keeping Your Ferret Happy

Ferrets are extremely cute and incredibly energetic, but is your ferret really happy? Many people think that as long as they provide their ferret with the basic necessities of life and a few toys that this will keep the ferret happy – but this is not true. Ferrets need a great deal more for their happiness.

Ferrets need companionship – whether that companionship comes from another ferret, another domestic animal, or a human being doesn’t really matter all that much, but the companionship is very important. They need both love and attention.

Ferrets don’t understand what you are saying to them, but they understand how you are saying it very well. Your ferret will come to know the sound of your voice – and will also learn what your various tones mean. They will know when you are happy with them, when you are merely pleased, and even when you are angry or agitated with them.

You can hurt your ferret’s feelings. This is necessary when they are doing something bad, but you must be careful. You don’t want your ferret to fear you – even when they aren’t doing something wrong. Talk to your ferret often, and make sure that you are using the appropriate tone of voice.

If you have a bad day at work, and your ferret is underfoot in the evening, you might accidentally talk roughly to the ferret – simply because you had a bad day that has nothing to do with the ferret. While your spouse may understand you snapping at him or her after a bad day, the ferret absolutely will not understand. Don’t break your ferret’s heart!

Like cats, ferrets like to be neat and well groomed. If you don’t help your ferret to be hygienic, he will grow to be unhappy. Make sure that you clip his nails, wipe out his ears, bath him once a month, and keep him free of fleas. Also, take him to the vet for regular checkups. Just as you don’t feel very happy when you are ill, your ferret won’t either.

Don’t allow your ferret to become bored. They love to explore, and you need to keep it fresh for them. Rearrange the room that your ferret likes to play in. Get a couple of boxes and fill them up with a few objects just so that your ferret has something to explore. Whatever you do, don’t allow him to become bored with his surroundings. A bored ferret is much like a bored child – it is only a matter of time before they find trouble!

At the same time, don’t make changes that upset your ferret, if you can avoid it. One thing that will greatly distress your ferret is if you leave him for very long. Going to work is one thing – he will adjust to a regular schedule. But if you go on vacation – if possible – take him along. Otherwise, try to find a sitter that he knows well.

Overall, watch your ferret and learn his habits. If you do this, you will easily be able to tell when your ferret is unhappy with something. If your ferret grows unhappy, first check to make sure that there is not a physical problem. If there is not, you must assume that the problem is mental.
