How to Train a Ferret
So, your ferret needs a little training? Unlike dogs, there is no obedience school for ferrets – but they are intelligent creatures, and they are very easy to train. This is something that you can easily do yourself with a little know-how and a lot of patience.
The first thing you will want to train your ferret to do is to use the litter box – obviously. Luckily, this is very easy to do, because ferrets have very specific bathroom habits. First, a ferret needs to relieve himself upon waking, and again after eating or drinking.
Second, when a ferret is about to do his business, he seeks out a corner – which is where you want to position the litter box. The ferret will back into the corner, as opposed to walking straight in it, so you will know what he is about to do. All you have to do is put the litter box in the corner he has chosen, or immediately pick him up – before he relieves himself – and carry him to the litter box. That’s all it really takes – and before long, he will know where he is supposed to go.
You will also want to train your ferret not to nip you. While they don’t usually mean to hurt you when they bite, it does hurt, and this is behavior that you must teach the ferret is not acceptable. A tap on the nose and a sharp ‘no’ does the trick, but you must be quick and consistent.
When he nips, you discipline – but then you stop disciplining him. Don’t let him think that you are still mad. When he nips again, repeat the process. Eventually – in a short span of time – he will learn that nipping displeases you, and he will stop doing it.
Just like training your ferret not to nip, you can train him to do many things. The key, again, is consistency, and making sure that the ferret knows what has pleased you. He knows you are pleased because he gets a treat. So, help him perform the trick you want him to perform, and reward him – over and over again. Training a ferret not to bite and to use the litter box doesn’t take much – but training him to do tricks does require a bit more time.
Also, when training your ferret to do tricks, make sure that he has first had time to fully explore the room that you are in. Otherwise, his attention will be on exploring, and not on performing for you.
So, what tricks can ferrets do? They can pretty much do anything that you want them to do as long as it is physically possible. However, common tricks include sitting up, turning around (dancing), rolling over, sitting on your shoulder, or coming to you immediately when you make a certain sound.
After your ferret has learned a new trick, don’t expect them to perform it just because you want them to. They were trained with rewards – and they will always expect those rewards for a good performance. A dog, once trained to sit, will sit when commanded to do so, even if it means that he will not get a treat – ferrets are not quite as accommodating!
