The Proper Feeding Process For Your Little Puppy
As your puppy grows, you should weigh it one time each week until he reaches
six months of age. His growth rate, should be constant, you should increase the
amount of food that you give to your puppy at the same rate of his growth. You
can use a self-feeder to make sure the proper amount of food is being given to
the pup. If a puppy eats all the food he is fed, you can add just a little bit
more food, so that he will always have a little more than he can eat.
When you receive a puppy after he has been weaned he should already have a
feeding program in place from his previous owner. It is always best to keep the
puppy on the same feeding program that the other owner had him on, so you should
find out all you can from the previous owner, about the feeding program he was
on. The previous owner should be more than happy to provide you with all the
information, including the food type that the puppy is eating, as well as the
feeding times he is on. In addition, he should give you the amounts of food the
puppy is consuming. You should continue with this feeding program for at least
the first few days, this way the puppy can become used to his new surroundings.
However, you may want to change the old owners feeding routine to your way, this
is ok to do. You may not be able to keep the old routine as the previous owner,
due to certain circumstances, so it may be necessary to make the change. Don't
feel that just because he was a breeder that he knows exactly what he is doing,
he may just as well be misinformed and passing this wrong information off to
you, the new owner. This switch needs to be done in a manner to not put the
puppy in shock. You should slowly start the switching process. Like I said
before, you should try and wait a couple of days to let the puppy get better
acquainted with his new owners and his surroundings.
Puppies adapt fairly well, and in no time will be a bouncy happy little addition
to your home and family.
